On a Sunday morning in September 2017, Carson Daly got the call that changed everything. His mom, Pattie Daly Caruso, had passed away unexpectedly due to a heart attack. Now, over a year later, Carson is opening up about the tragedy in a heartfelt segment on the Today show, just in time for American Heart Month. He’s sharing not only his pain but also the lessons he’s learned from losing someone so close to him.
Appearing on the show last Valentine's Day, the 45-year-old television personality spoke candidly about the loss of his mom and wrote a deeply personal essay for the Today website. "This month, I find myself thinking more about women's health, especially when it comes to heart disease," Carson said, his voice tinged with emotion. "Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in America. And unfortunately, I've experienced that firsthand. It's personal, it's painful, but if sharing my story helps even one family, then it's worth it."
A Special Bond
Carson went on to describe the special bond he shared with his mom. "My mom and I had this incredible relationship," he said, his voice softening with emotion. "We were super close. She lived life with such passion and energy. She always said, 'Go big or don't go at all.' She truly lived every day like it was her last, and that's something I'll always carry with me."

Shocked by the Unexpected
Carson revealed that he never expected his mom's passing to come so suddenly. "I never in a million years thought my mom would die from a heart attack," he admitted. "There were no warning signs, no symptoms. It came out of nowhere. When the phone rang in the middle of the night, I immediately thought, 'Is Dad okay?' But it was my sister Quinn on the line, and she said, 'No, it's not Dad. It's Mom.' Trying to put into words what my relationship with my mom meant to me is impossible. The love we shared was so deep that the pain of losing her is just as overwhelming."
In his segment, Carson shared the last text he received from his mom, just hours before she passed. It was a heartfelt message filled with love and gratitude: "We love you, the best son on the planet Earth. So happy to have a light out in front. [Carson had recently changed a light bulb at the house.] Thanks for all you did and do to make our lives better and to make us so proud of you.
