Inside Anne Hathaway's Journey Through Motherhood And Acting

Serenity star Anne Hathaway is opening up about the challenges and joys of motherhood. The 36-year-old actress, who’s juggling her career with raising her 2-year-old son, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, recently shared some heartfelt thoughts on parenting. In a candid interview with People, Anne revealed that while she’s doing her best to nurture her child, there’s always room for growth—and yes, even she experiences that all-too-familiar "mom guilt." Let's dive deeper into what she had to say.

Learning the Art of Motherhood

When it comes to raising a child, Anne Hathaway is all about embracing the process. "I’m learning. It’s like working out a new set of muscles," she told People. She admitted that playing "isolated characters" in her films can sometimes make it challenging to connect emotionally with her son. "It’s hard when you play characters who are so disconnected from others. I just wrapped one this summer where my character was completely isolated. Holding Jonathan felt right, but I couldn’t help but wonder if I was truly giving him what he needed." It's a balance between her professional life and her role as a mom, and she's figuring it out step by step.

    Letting Go of Perfection

As much as Anne loves being a mom, she knows it's important to cut herself some slack. "I try to be kind to myself," she explained. "I’m not a fan of mommy guilt. I don’t dwell on it unless I absolutely have to." It’s a mindset that keeps her grounded and reminds her that perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Whether it's juggling career demands or simply enjoying moments with her son, Anne is learning to give herself credit for the effort.

From Screen to Home: Balancing Complex Roles

In her latest movie, Serenity, Anne plays a woman who teams up with her ex-lover, played by Matthew McConaughey, to get rid of her abusive husband. Her character is intense, complex, and emotionally taxing. "If I’m in a character for three months, I make sure I’m not in that character at home," she said. "I don’t want Jonathan to feel like he’s sharing me with someone else. It’s a three-month commitment, and I remind myself that I’m doing my best. To counteract the intensity, I focus on being present for him whenever I can."

"It’s about finding balance," she added. "When I step away from a role, I need to ensure I’m fully present for my family. That way, Jonathan doesn’t feel like he’s competing for my attention. It’s not always easy, but I remind myself that this is temporary, and I’m giving it my all."

Anne knows that as her son grows older, balancing her career and family will become even more challenging. "Things will probably get harder as Jonathan gets older," she admitted. "But right now, I’m just enjoying the time we have together. Whether it’s playing with puppets or reading bedtime stories, these moments remind me why I do what I do." For Anne, it’s not about having all the answers—it’s about cherishing the journey and making the most of every second with her son.
