Rita Moreno Returns To The Spotlight As 'West Side Story' Gets A Reboot

Rita Moreno Will Sit in on 'West Side Story' Rehearsals and Doesn't

With the iconic 1961 film West Side Story set for a reboot in 2019, all eyes are once again on Rita Moreno, the original star who's ready to take center stage. And let me tell you, she’s not just sitting back and watching this one from the sidelines. Rita's made it clear she'll be keeping a close eye on every rehearsal, and I have a feeling the cast might be feeling a little nervous knowing the legend herself will be in the room.

Steven Spielberg Brings the Classic to Life Again

Rita Moreno, the Oscar-winning actress who’s now 87 years old, opened up to People magazine about the new Steven Spielberg version of the film that launched her career at the tender age of 30. Rita understands that after over half a century, some aspects of the original movie will naturally evolve. But she's not shy about wanting to preserve the essence of what made the original so special. And if that means showing up to rehearsals to make sure the dancers haven’t strayed too far from the original choreography, she’s ready to do just that. “I’ll be visiting rehearsals,” she joked to the magazine, adding with a playful tone, “You took that step out, are you crazy?”

When it was suggested that the dancers might be a bit intimidated by having the iconic star of the original film watching them, Rita, known for her role in Oz, simply replied, “Tough darts!” Playing Anita in the original, Rita may be older now, but she’s still got the moves like Dick Van Dyke. That’s why she’s not just observing—she’s also starring in the new version of the movie.

As reported by Deadline, Rita will take on the role of Valentina, a fresh and expanded version of the corner store owner where one of the main characters, Tony, played by Ansel Elgort, works. Rita expressed her excitement about being part of the new adaptation: “Never in my wildest dreams did I see myself revisiting this seminal work,” she shared. “And to be asked by Steven Spielberg to participate is simply thrilling! Then, to work together with the brilliant playwright Tony Kushner — what a glorious stew! I am tingling.”
