Let’s be honest—there’s something truly magical about revisiting the classics. Dick Van Dyke, at the spry age of 93, couldn’t agree more. The legendary actor, who stole our hearts in the original Mary Poppins, had the chance to step back into the spotlight in the 2018 sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. And boy, was he thrilled about it! Speaking at the 2019 Golden Globes on January 6, Dick couldn’t help but joke about his acting career and how it seems to hit its stride every few decades.
“Every 50 years or so, I get a really good job,” Dick quipped, as reported by People. “I didn’t get to come down a chimney this time around, but let me tell you, the new movie is fantastic. It’s a different take on Mary Poppins, sure, but times change. And so do I!”

Why Dick Van Dyke Said Yes to Mary Poppins Returns
When asked why he decided to join the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, Dick revealed it was his deep love for musicals that swayed him. “As soon as I heard there’d be a little number for me, I was sold!” he shared. “I thought I could bring a little nostalgia to the film, just a gentle reminder of the original. And you know what? It turned out great. I even got to jump up on a desk and do a dance number. It shocked everyone, but trust me, no one was more surprised than me!”

He went on to describe the experience, adding, “We did several takes, and I was just amazed at how much fun I was having. Dancing at 93? Who would’ve thought? But I enjoyed every single moment. It was a blast.”
A Hesitant Start, But a Heartfelt Decision
Initially, Dick admitted he was a bit wary about joining the sequel. After all, sequels don’t always live up to the original. “I’ve always thought that sequels rarely work, almost by tradition,” he explained. “But when I heard that this one would be a tribute to Walt and the original film, I was all in. Their hearts were in the right place. They wanted to honor the classic, and that really resonated with me.”
