There's a growing feud between Mo’Nique and Whoopi Goldberg, and it's not pretty. The tension started when Whoopi, during an appearance on The View, suggested she could have "schooled" Mo’Nique on industry salaries. This didn’t sit well with Mo’Nique, who had launched a boycott against Netflix in January 2018 over what she felt was an unfair offer for her comedy special. Now, the Oscar-winning actress is speaking out with some pretty strong words.
Let’s rewind for a moment. Back in 2018, Mo’Nique, now 51, took a stand against Netflix, claiming their offer for her comedy special was unjust. She brought her frustrations to The View, where Whoopi, 63, chimed in with her two cents. Whoopi told Mo’Nique, “If you had called me, I could’ve schooled you on what was expected.” Oof. And that comment set off a firestorm.
Mo’Nique’s Reaction to Whoopi’s Comments
Mo’Nique didn’t mince words when she spoke to Vulture. She questioned what exactly Whoopi would be teaching her. “When you have a woman saying, ‘I could have schooled you,’ someone would say, ‘What was the schooling going to be?’” Mo’Nique asked rhetorically. She went on to explain her perspective: “When I look at this woman you say is our icon and our legend — she is. But how many things has Whoopi Goldberg executive produced? Whoopi Goldberg has always been the help, and I say that humbly. So what is it that you’re going to school me on? I’ve been doing this for almost 30 years.”

Mo’Nique wasn’t done there. She added, “This is a woman who says ‘I could have schooled you,’ and this is a woman who accepted Ted Danson in blackface, and our community praises this woman. So oftentimes, we do it to ourselves. But, I just can’t. Understand, I love my sister. However, when you know you’re being fed the wrong food, you must say, ‘I can’t chew this, y’all.’” It’s clear that Mo’Nique feels strongly about the message being sent to younger generations in the industry.
