Believe it or not, jury duty is something that catches up with everyone—even A-list celebrities. But Neil Patrick Harris, the ever-charismatic actor, pulled out all the stops to try and avoid his civic duty. On a recent episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden, Neil confessed to pretending he was related to none other than James Corden himself to wiggle out of serving on a jury.

During the January 24 episode, the 46-year-old Neil Patrick Harris admitted to James Corden, "I tried everything to get out of it, man." He continued, "When I first got the letter saying I had to show up, I figured it was like spam. You know, one of those things they send out hoping people actually show up. So, I didn’t go. At the time, I was busy filming A Series of Unfortunate Events up in Canada, which gave me a legitimate excuse. But then, they sent me an actual summons. I was like, 'Whoa, this is serious. If I don’t show up, I’m going to jail.'"

The Jury Duty Saga: How Far Would You Go?

So, Neil eventually showed up for his jury duty, and this is where the story takes a quirky turn. "When I finally went, I served my time, and I met with some lawyers. There was a case about asbestos, and they had to question everyone individually," Neil explained. "They asked if there was any reason I couldn’t be there for the entire week. I had to raise my hand and explain that I would be flying to Los Angeles to appear on The Late Late Show, and therefore, I wouldn’t be available for the second half of the week."

One of the lawyers informed Neil that the only valid reason to be excused from jury duty was a family situation. "The lawyer asked me, 'Do you have any family that will be in Los Angeles at the same time as you?' I thought fast and said, 'Yeah, James Corden is my second cousin.' The lawyer just nodded and said, 'Great, you’re free to go,'" Neil recalled with a laugh. Now, that’s one creative way to get out of something you don’t want to do—just claim you’re related to someone famous. Or, you can always go with the classic line, "Do you know who my father is?"

Neil Patrick Harris: A Fan of Elton John

Maybe next time, Neil can try saying he’s related to Elton John to get out of a parking ticket. Speaking of Elton John, Neil and his husband, David Burtka, recently took their 8-year-old twins, Gideon and Harper, to their very first concert. Who did they see? None other than the legendary "Tiny Dancer" singer himself, Elton John. It seems like the Harris-Burtka family has a knack for rubbing shoulders with iconic celebrities.
