Prince Philip Apologizes For Car Accident: A Heartfelt Letter To The Injured Passenger

Prince Philip Writes Apology Letter to Car Crash Victim

It’s been nearly a week since Prince Philip was involved in a car crash, and finally, he’s taken the time to extend his heartfelt apologies to Emma Fairweather, the woman who suffered a broken wrist because of the accident. In a gesture that speaks volumes about his character, the 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh has sent a personal letter, expressing how deeply sorry he is for the incident.

What Happened During the Accident?

On January 17, the Duke of Edinburgh, who’s no stranger to the road, was driving his Land Rover near his Sandringham estate when tragedy struck. His vehicle overturned, leaving everyone involved shaken but thankfully, with only minor injuries. While Prince Philip walked away unscathed, the driver of the other car—a 28-year-old woman—sustained scratches on her knee, and her 9-month-old baby was, miraculously, left unharmed. However, Emma Fairweather, who was riding in the passenger seat, wasn’t as fortunate. She sustained a significant injury to her wrist. It wasn’t until recently that Prince Philip reached out to her with a formal apology.

Prince Philip’s Apology Letter

In an 181-word message, Queen Elizabeth’s husband conveyed his regret for the accident, writing, “I would like you to know how very sorry I am for my part in the accident at the Babingley cross-roads.” He went on to describe the scene, saying, “I have been across that crossing any number of times and I know very well the amount of traffic that uses that main road. It was a bright sunny day and at about three in the afternoon, the sun was low over the Wash.”

    Emma Fairweather's Reaction

Emma Fairweather, 46, shared her thoughts with Mirror, expressing how touched she was when she received the letter at her home in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, on January 23. “It was a nice touch,” she said. “When I opened it, I saw the Sandringham House headed paper and went ‘Oh my God!’ He asked how I was and said sorry that I was in pain. I was chuffed.”

The letter continued, “I was somewhat shaken after the accident, but I was greatly relieved that none of you were seriously injured. As a crowd was beginning to gather, I was advised to return to Sandringham House by a local Police Officer. I have since learned that you suffered a broken arm. I am deeply sorry about this injury. I wish you a speedy recovery from a very distressing experience.”
