Exciting Announcements for Netflix's "Ratched"
Let me tell you, folks, Ryan Murphy is heating things up with his latest Netflix series, Ratched. Every casting announcement he makes feels like a blockbuster drop. It all started when Sarah Paulson, the queen of Murphy's American Horror Story anthology and the badass from M. Night Shyamalan's Glass, was cast in the title role. But hold onto your hats, because the cast announcements don't stop there. Sharon Stone and Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon have joined the roster, alongside other incredible talents. Ryan Murphy himself has referred to this lineup as a "murderer's row of talent." And let's be honest, given his track record, this man knows exactly what he's talking about.
Exploring the World of "Ratched"
Ratched is set to be a prequel to Milo Forman’s iconic film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which swept the 1975 Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched), Best Director for Forman, and Best Screenplay for Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman. The story follows Nicholson's Patrick McMurphy, who thinks transferring from a prison farm to a mental institution is a clever move. He believes he can outsmart the system and do as he pleases. But then he meets Nurse Ratched, a force to be reckoned with, who uses every trick in the book to maintain control over her patients. The ensuing battle of wills between McMurphy and Ratched is nothing short of epic, and McMurphy soon realizes that he may not come out on top.

A Feminist Take on a Classic Villain
Last year, while speaking at GQ Live, Ryan Murphy shared his vision for the series, describing it as a "gorgeous story championing feminism." He reflected on Nurse Ratched, one of the greatest villains in cinematic history, comparing her to a female Hannibal Lecter. "She's a great, great villain who is very misunderstood," Murphy mused. "How did she get this way? What made her do that? How do you become a sociopath? Most people are not born that way." These questions promise to give viewers a deeper understanding of Ratched's character and her motivations, making the series not just a thrilling watch but a thought-provoking exploration of human nature.

Original Nurse Ratched, Louise Fletcher, shared her thoughts with the UK’s Independent, drawing parallels between her character and the political climate of the time. Fletcher reflected that in early 1975, shortly after Nixon's resignation due to the Watergate scandal, she began to see Nurse Ratched as a symbol of the idea that power corrupts. "She was convinced that she had her world in order and that for it to work properly it had to be in that order," Fletcher explained. "The minute McMurphy arrived, things began to fall apart for her, and she couldn’t have that. She had enough power that her conviction would have consequences — and that’s where I felt we were in the world at the time, too. The film was all about who has the power and how they use it, and how absolute power absolutely corrupts."
