Hey there, movie fans! Let's dive into a fun one. Benedict Cumberbatch, the guy who wowed us as Doctor Strange, has now taken on the role of the mischievous Grinch in a new animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss's classic tale, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This time around, the story is simply titled The Grinch. The original book was published back in 1957 and has been adapted twice before—once as a half-hour animated special in 1966 and then as a live-action film in 2000 starring Jim Carrey. But here’s the kicker: this new version is taking some bold creative leaps, straying a bit from the original story to bring fresh energy to the tale.
A New Spin on an Old Favorite
So, what's changed? The Grinch still lives alone on Mt. Crumpet with his loyal dog, Max, surrounded by his inventions. He only ventures into Whoville when he absolutely has to—like for groceries. But as Christmas rolls around, the Whos get louder and brighter with their celebrations, driving the Grinch crazy. His solution? Steal Christmas. Yep, you heard that right. To pull it off, he decides to dress up as Santa Claus and even ropes in a laid-back reindeer named Fred to pull his sleigh. Meanwhile, in Whoville, little Cindy-Lou Who, voiced by Cameron Seely from The Greatest Showman, hatches her own plan. She wants to catch Santa on Christmas Eve to ask for help for her hardworking mom, Donna Who, played by Rashida Jones. As Christmas approaches, these two plans are on a collision course. Will Cindy-Lou's optimism triumph over the Grinch's grumpiness? You bet!
Let’s be honest here, folks. I’m betting on joy and optimism. But hey, you’ll have to see it for yourself!

Inside the Grinch's Heart
Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination Entertainment, spills the beans on what makes this version of the Grinch tick. “At the heart of this story is a character who was deeply hurt as a child,” he explains. “He’s on a mission to destroy the joy of others because he hasn’t experienced that joy himself. But it takes someone truly innocent and full of hope—like Cindy-Lou Who—to bring him back to life, to help him reconnect with others and believe in goodness again.”
Now, casting the right actor for the Grinch is no small task. Chris shares, “We wanted someone who would instantly give the movie credibility, someone whose name alone would reflect the film’s ambition and depth. We weren’t sure if Benedict Cumberbatch would be interested, but once we heard his voice paired with the Grinch, we knew he’d bring a unique twist to the character. Someone with plenty of humanity but also a knack for the wicked humor.”
Benedict Cumberbatch's Take on the Grinch
Benedict, fresh off his stellar performance as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War, talks about what drew him to this project. “First off, it’s being produced by Illumination Entertainment, the masterminds behind Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing. Their films are witty, intelligent, and heartfelt. Plus, they really respected the original book, which I adore. And honestly, collaborating with them was a blast. It was also important to me that we gave the Grinch a backstory. Understanding why Christmas hurts him makes you root for him, even before his transformation. Let’s face it, we all love watching the Grinch’s antics. His crankiness is hilarious, and I hope that’s what people will remember about this version. He’s witty, self-aware, and despite his heart being two sizes too small, there’s a lot of heart in this movie.”
Mark your calendars, folks! The Grinch hits theaters on November 9.
