Hey there, movie lovers! Over the next few years, Walt Disney Pictures is set to wow us with a series of live-action adaptations of their beloved animated classics. Starting in 2019, the next wave is all set to kick off, and it begins with the heartwarming tale of Dumbo, the circus elephant who can fly. And guess what? The new Dumbo trailer has just dropped, giving us an even better glimpse of what we can expect from this film. And let me tell you, it's looking absolutely fantastic!

Tim Burton Takes the Helm
Leading the charge on this adaptation is none other than Tim Burton, the master of the macabre who previously transformed Alice in Wonderland into a billion-dollar live-action blockbuster franchise. If you recall, that adaptation even spawned a sequel. Now, Tim Burton is hoping to work his magic on Dumbo, bringing the same level of creativity and vision to this beloved story.
Disney describes the plot this way: "Dumbo introduces us to Holt Farrier, played by Colin Farrell, a former circus star whose life takes a dramatic turn when he returns from the war. Max Medici, played by Danny DeVito, the circus owner, enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him the laughingstock of an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children discover that Dumbo can fly, the enterprising V.A. Vandevere, played by Michael Keaton, and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant, played by Eva Green, arrive on the scene to turn the peculiar pachyderm into a star."
An Interesting Cast with a Nod to the Past
Here's a fun fact: Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito have history together. They battled it out in 1992’s Batman Returns, which was also directed by Tim Burton. Back then, Keaton played the Dark Knight, and DeVito portrayed the Penguin. It's a fun nod to the past, bringing these two actors together again under Burton's direction, but this time in a completely different setting.

A Glimpse into the Original 1941 Classic
For all you history buffs out there, Wikipedia offers some fascinating background on the original 1941 classic. "Dumbo is based on a children's story written by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, with illustrations by Helen Durney. It was originally created to demonstrate a toy storytelling device called Roll-A-Book, which was similar to a panorama. The original story featured only eight drawings and just a few lines of text, with Red Robin as Dumbo's ally instead of Timothy Mouse."
Dumbo was first introduced to Walt Disney in late 1939 by Disney’s head of merchandise licensing, Kay Kamen, who showed him a prototype of the Roll-A-Book that included Dumbo. Disney immediately recognized its potential and the heartwarming story behind it, purchasing the rights promptly. Initially, it was intended to be a short film, but Disney soon realized that the only way to do justice to the book was to make it feature-length. At the time, the Disney Studio was facing financial challenges due to the war in Europe, which caused Pinocchio and Fantasia to fail at the box office. As a result, Dumbo was designed to be a low-budget feature to bring revenue to the studio. Thankfully, it turned out to be a huge success, setting the stage for the Disney we know and love today.
