There’s one thing that Hoda Kotb treasures more than anything else in the world: being a mom to her precious one-year-old daughter, Haley Joy Kotb. For Hoda, this dream didn’t come easy. During a candid conversation on the Thrive Global Podcast, Hoda, now 54, opened up about the challenges she faced. “After cancer, they told me all the options—freezing eggs, trying this or that—but they were clear: it was unlikely anything would work,” she admitted. “At the time, I blocked out just how devastating that news was. You know, when you’re fighting for your life, you don’t think about the future. But when the fight is over, and you’re left with the aftermath, it hits you hard.”
Hoda’s journey wasn’t just about dealing with the physical scars of cancer; it was also about finding happiness again after her two-year marriage to Burzis Kanga ended in divorce. “It felt like an avalanche of pain,” she recalled. “I was going through a separation that would lead to divorce. It was like everything bad was happening all at once. I remember thinking, how do people handle this? How does anyone deal with so much loss and heartbreak?”

Turning to Faith in Times of Darkness
Through it all, Hoda turned to her faith. “We were raised to believe in God,” she shared. “That was always a part of my life. But when you’re in the middle of something so painful, you start to question. Can He really hear me? Is this all just in my head? Am I just talking to myself? These are the questions that run through your mind when you’re in the darkest moments.”
But Hoda didn’t let the doubts take over. Instead, she leaned into her faith, finding strength in the belief that there was a purpose to her pain. And then, everything changed.
The Arrival of Haley Joy: A Gift from Above
When Hoda adopted Haley Joy, her life transformed in ways she never imagined. “I’ll be honest, I had doubts,” she confessed. “But when Haley arrived, all those doubts vanished. It was like everything I believed in was personified in her. Watching her grow and thrive, I feel like she’s proof of everything—every prayer, every hope, every dream.”
Hoda’s love for her daughter is evident in every word she speaks about her. “She’s the best! I can’t believe I get to be her mom. Every day with her is a reminder of the blessings in my life,” she gushed.
