Sometimes, the advice we get from our moms is spot-on, and sometimes... well, let’s just say it leaves us scratching our heads. On her Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, Jada Pinkett Smith shared a moment when her mom, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, questioned her marriage to Will Smith. Adrienne suggested that the couple consider divorce, which left Jada baffled. Apparently, Jada’s mom didn’t quite understand why Jada and Will referred to themselves as “life partners” instead of sticking with the traditional husband-and-wife label.
Why Divorce Was Never an Option for Jada
During the episode, Jada revealed how her mom questioned the unconventional nature of their relationship. “She was like, ‘Well, why don’t you guys just divorce?’” Jada explained, but the thought of splitting up wasn’t even on the table for the 47-year-old actress. She shared that the foundation they’ve built together—both as individuals and as a family—is too precious to dismantle. “One of the ideas for me is that we’ve built such a beautiful community, we’ve built such a beautiful family… we do well together. Breaking that group and community up for me? It’s just never an option,” Jada said with heartfelt conviction.

Protecting Her Family
Jada also expressed her deep desire to keep her family intact for the sake of her two children with Will: son Jaden Smith, 20, and daughter Willow Smith, 18. In her eyes, growing up in a loving, unified home is paramount. She elaborated during the episode, explaining that getting a divorce requires a level of emotional maturity she simply doesn’t possess. “For me, personally, I’m not mature enough to have a divorce,” Jada admitted candidly. “I’m just not. I don’t think I would ever be mature enough. When you have to start going in, breaking up assets… that’s when the red table turns upside down, and it won’t be red no more!”

Choosing Growth Over Division
Despite the challenges that come with any long-term relationship, Jada believes in working through the tough times rather than opting for divorce. “I actually have more maturity to figure it out within, and work with what I got,” she said. Jada went on to acknowledge that even the most amicable divorces can still leave emotional scars. “I’ve seen people try to have the most friendly divorces and at some point, it’s still painful,” she reflected.

Connection Through Distance
Jada emphasized that while marriage isn’t always easy, finding ways to stay connected is crucial. “Sometimes we’re in all different parts of the world. We love doing what we love to do and we flow so much light and power to one another to do it. That’s the thing that keeps us connected,” she said. Whether they’re miles apart or side by side, the couple prioritizes nurturing their bond and supporting each other’s passions.
