Hold on to your hats, folks. During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her memoir, Becoming, Michelle Obama revealed something that might surprise you. It turns out that First Families have to pay for their own groceries while living in the White House. Yes, you heard that right.
Life Inside the White House: Not Everything Is Free
During their lively chat about her book, Jimmy Kimmel mentioned that one of the most intriguing things he read was Michelle's revelation about how the President and his family must foot the bill for their pantry while residing in Washington D.C. Michelle responded with a laugh, "Who would have thought? It’s wild because most people don’t realize what it’s like to live in the White House. The rent is free, and the staff is free, but we shouldn’t be mooching off taxpayers."
She continued, "The thing is, the White House chef and kitchen staff let you pick out whatever food you want—it’s like a dream come true! But here’s the catch: you’ve got to pay for it later. It’s a little shocking because no one really tells you these things when you move in."

Michelle Obama’s Approach to Dining in the White House
Mitchell shared a fun anecdote about how she approached this situation with her husband, Barack Obama. "I would tell Barack, 'Do not express pleasure for anything unless I know how much it costs.' They’re very responsive, but it’s all at your expense," she explained. "In all fairness, if we want a certain kind of jam or jelly, we should pay for that. It’s only right."
A Night to Remember: Celebrating Gay Marriage
In another engaging TV appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Michelle opened up about an unforgettable evening during her time in the White House. She recalled the moment when gay marriage was legalized, and the entire country erupted in celebration. "When you’re in the residence, there’s so much bullet-proof glass that sometimes you don’t hear what’s going on outside," she said. "We were having dinner and listening to the sounds of celebration, but we didn’t realize that thousands of people were gathering in front of the White House at that time to celebrate."
Michelle went on to describe her desire to join in on the celebration. "My staff was calling me, everyone was celebrating, people were crying, and I thought, 'I want to be in that.' We had worked hard to ensure that the White House was lit up in the LGBT colors, and it was breathtaking," she said. "I was sitting and watching it on TV, realizing, 'I’m living this.' I said, 'I have to break out of this. I want to go outside and be a part of that celebration.'"
But, as you might imagine, escaping the White House isn’t as easy as it sounds. "Even if I could get past the Secret Service, I didn’t want to be seen by the media in my comfy sweatpants," she joked. "So, I stayed inside, but it sure sounded like a fun plan!"

It’s moments like these that remind us just how human the Obamas truly are. Despite the grandeur of the White House, they faced everyday challenges, celebrated historic milestones, and made the most of their time in the spotlight.
