In the revealing new documentary, Prince, Son, and Heir: Charles at 70, which aired on BBC One on November 8, Prince Harry shared a hilarious insight into one of his own quirks that drives his wife, Meghan Markle, absolutely batty. And guess what? It’s all about the lights.
Harry, the charming Duke of Sussex, explained in the documentary, “My wife certainly goes, ‘Well, why turn the lights off? It’s dark,’ and I go, ‘We only need one light, we don’t need, like, six,’ and all of a sudden, it becomes a habit.” Sounds like Meghan, at 37, is going to have to get accustomed to this particular Harry trait. But hey, isn’t that what marriage is all about—learning to love each other’s little idiosyncrasies?
Harry's Eco-Friendly Habit Passed Down from Prince Charles
Prince Harry, at 34 years young, admits that his habit of switching off lights stems directly from his dad, Prince Charles, who’s known for being super particular about conserving energy. This should come as no shock to anyone, considering Charles has been an ardent advocate for environmental conservation for decades now.

“That’s now something that I’m obsessed with,” Harry confessed. Interestingly, he's not the only one in the family with this quirk. His older brother, Prince William, chimed in, saying, “I’ve got serious OCD on light switches now, which is terrible.” It’s clear that Charles’s influence runs deep within the royal family.
Charles's Vision for Future Generations
We can only imagine that Charles, now 69, is thrilled to see his sons following in his eco-friendly footsteps. This is especially important as he eagerly awaits the arrival of his fourth grandchild. Despite the excitement, Charles has expressed concerns about the state of the world his grandchildren will inherit.
“I am about to have another grandchild actually,” Charles revealed, as per The Telegraph. “It does seem to me insanity if we are going to bequeath this completely polluted, damaged, and destroyed world to them.” He went on to say, “All grandchildren deserve a better future.” It’s clear that Charles is deeply invested in creating a sustainable future for the next generation.
Family Bonding Through Litter Picking
Turning off lights isn't the only eco-friendly habit that resonated with William and Harry. In the documentary, we also learned about the times when the two brothers would join their father in picking up trash. “He took us litter picking, when we were younger, on holiday,” William, now 36, reminisced. “Both of us thought, ‘This is perfectly normal, everyone must do it.’ We’re there with our, basically, spikes, stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags.”
Perhaps Harry and William were inspired by both Charles and their late mother, Princess Diana. “He’s done an amazing job. Without telling us what we should be doing or the direction we should go in, he’s just let us learn from the nature of the job, learn from him, learn from mummy,” Harry shared. Whether or not Harry’s light-switch obsession lasts, it’s a safe bet that his children will be taught the importance of respecting the environment, just as he was!
