EXCLUSIVE: 'Barney Miller' Star Hal Linden Remembers The Late, Great

In 1975, television saw the debut of some truly memorable police shows, but none quite like Barney Miller. While series like Baretta, S.W.A.T., and Matt Helm were making waves, alongside comedies such as Phyllis, One Day at a Time, and Welcome Back Kotter, there was something unique about Barney Miller. This groundbreaking show, starring Hal Linden as the titular character, set itself apart by blending police procedural elements with a distinct comedic tone.

Set in New York's 12th Precinct, located in the vibrant Greenwich Village, Barney Miller focused on the daily lives of its ensemble cast of cops and the various characters—both mischievous and misunderstood—who found themselves in the station. Among the unforgettable cast were Abe Vigoda as Fish, Max Gail as Wojciehowicz, Ron Glass as Harris, Jack Soo as Yemana, Gregory Sierra as Chano, Steve Landesberg as Dietrich, and Ron Carey as Levitt. Each brought their own quirks and charm to the show, creating a rich tapestry of personalities that viewers came to love.
