Ellen Pompeo's Journey: Balancing Fame And Family Amidst A Complex Past

Let me tell you about someone who’s got the world at her feet: actress Ellen Pompeo. You might know her as Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy, but her life is far more than just playing a doctor on TV. Back in late 2017, Ellen scored a deal that made headlines—she negotiated a contract that would bring her over $20 million a year. That’s right, folks, making her the highest-paid actress on a prime-time drama. But hold on, that's not all. She already has an enviable lifestyle with four homes and three beautiful kids, Stella, 8, Sienna, 3, and baby Eli, who’s just over a year old, all with her husband, music producer Chris Ivery.

Behind the Glamour: A Cloud of Concern

Now, here's the twist in the tale. Beneath the glamorous surface, there's a shadow that occasionally looms over Ellen and her family. A source close to the couple revealed to In Touch, “Her husband has a criminal past.” Even though it's been years since Chris last tangled with the law, there's still a part of Ellen that can't help but worry if old issues might resurface. It’s like having a storm cloud that never fully dissipates, hanging there in the background. Chris, now 50, has no less than 13 convictions under his belt, for everything from drug trafficking to counterfeiting documents, credit card fraud, postal theft, and probation violations. He’s also spent time behind bars, including a stint in federal prison. But here’s the thing: Chris has turned his life around. “He’s not running from anything,” insists the source. “His problems with the law were a very long time ago, and all his skeletons have been revealed.”

Before they tied the knot in 2007, Chris laid all his cards on the table with Ellen, then 48. Back in 1987, when he was just 19, Chris got himself into trouble with the law over cocaine and marijuana possession with intent to sell. During his arrest, he even told the cops he'd once been shot in the neck during a drug-related robbery. He ended up serving three months in jail after missing probation hearings, and a few years later, he faced jail time again following another cocaine possession arrest. By the time two more convictions, including one for accepting stolen property, rolled around, Chris found himself serving 15 months in a Pennsylvania federal prison, completing his sentence in 1995. But in 1998, he was back in the system, this time facing charges for intent to distribute after receiving a 10-pound UPS package of marijuana worth $7,000. This time, he spent six months at home under an electronic monitoring device.

After those six months were over, Chris decided it was time to clean up his act. “Of course, Ellen’s concern then was that it maybe wasn’t all in his past, but thankfully it was,” the source revealed, adding that Ellen and Chris bonded early on over their difficult upbringings in blue-collar Boston suburbs. “They both came from rough neighborhoods, and she understood the life he had doing drugs and dealing drugs,” the source explained. (Ellen was only four years old when her mom passed away from a painkiller overdose, leaving Ellen and her five older siblings to be raised by their father.) “She and Chris understood each other, and it’s probably why they’re such a good match and still together,” the source concluded.

    Looking Forward, Not Back

Ellen doesn’t want to dwell on the past. She’s publicly tried to downplay Chris’s darker days, brushing them off as youthful mistakes. “Show me a teenager from Boston who doesn’t have a record,” she once quipped. She feels it was a long time ago and doesn’t hold much relevance today, “unless the kids ask about it,” according to the source. “But right now the kids are too young. They will talk about it with them when the time is right. Ellen is all about being open. They don’t want the kids to find out from anyone but them.”

  • For Chris, family is now his top priority. “Chris has been open about the mistakes he’s made and he’s learned from them. He’s not embarrassed. Today, he’s very committed to being a stand-up guy. He’s a successful businessman. He and Ellen do charity work all the time—they give back but are very low-key about it,” explained the source. “All of this bad behavior—the arrests, the jail time—it’s all in the past. They have a great life together, they support each other and only want to focus on their family.”
