Jack Benny’s personal life was just as fascinating as his career. He met his wife, Mary Livingstone (born Sadie Marks), at a Passover seder hosted by Zeppo Marx in the early 1920s. Joan recalls her mother as the disciplinarian, while Jack was more indulgent. “He was Daddy’s little girl,” she says affectionately. “He never dared contradict my mother. Jack valued Joan’s input and often consulted her. “On Sunday mornings before his radio shows, we’d drive to the beach in Malibu or Santa Monica, and he’d ask me what I thought of the show,” Joan remembers. “He treated me like I had a brain, which was wonderful.” As Joan grew up and started her own family, Jack became an adoring grandfather. “He was crazy about his grandkids,” she says. “He even took my son to Cape Canaveral for the moon launch!”
