It’s no secret that Duchess Kate’s style choices are under constant scrutiny, and her recent royal tour of Sweden and Norway has sparked quite the debate. According to some royal fans, including an 88-year-old reader named Connie Wilson who wrote to the Daily Mail, the 36-year-old Duchess may be dressing way too old for her age. Now, that’s a bold statement, isn’t it?
Connie Wilson didn’t mince words in her letter to the Daily Mail. She questioned whether Kate’s outfits were chosen by a stylist or if the Duchess herself was making these decisions. “Are these clothes provided by a stylist? Surely someone as shapely and beautiful as Kate could make better choices herself,” Connie wrote. She went on to criticize Kate’s wardrobe, saying, “It really is time to speak out against these appalling styles. The Duchess is on tour to represent [the UK] — but she might as well be wearing a black plastic sack!” Harsh words, right?

Jan Moir Weighs In: Kate’s Wardrobe Is "Middle-Aged and Dull"
Daily Mail writer Jan Moir couldn’t agree more with Connie’s critique. In her op-ed, Moir described Kate’s tour wardrobe as “so darned middle-aged and dull.” But it wasn’t just Kate who came under fire. Prince William’s fashion choices on the tour also didn’t impress Moir. She criticized the dodgy fur, foul prints, murky colors, and glum expressions, calling it a new low for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. “Why are they so old before their time?” Moir questioned, pointing out that the couple seemed to be dressing like Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, but worse.
Why Does Kate Dress This Way?
Interestingly, another Daily Mail article suggests that Kate’s lack of confidence in fashion has led her to mimic the styles of her more senior family members, like Camilla, Princess Anne, and even Queen Elizabeth. “She has to opt for classic and traditional styles. However, as it can be very formal this can at times age her unnecessarily. At times where she’s lacking in confidence, she might opt for overly formal options,” explained celebrity stylist and fashion presenter Naomi Isted.
According to Natalie Robinson, a stylist, Kate consistently dresses in an appropriate manner, which sometimes reflects older styles to align with her royal duties. However, Robinson suggests that the Duchess could incorporate standout accessories to make her outfits look more youthful while still being suitable for public appearances. “Perhaps she could add a subtle pop of color in the form of stunning jewels or by wearing a dress with a shorter hem which she sometimes does,” Robinson recommended.
