Trading Spaces Returns: A Feel-Good Revival With Original Designers

It's hard to believe that Trading Spaces, the show that sparked the "home makeover" TV revolution, first hit our screens more than 17 years ago. Fans tuned in for the thrilling transformations, the hilarious banter among the designers, and the sometimes outrageously quirky makeovers (remember the infamous "hay room"?). This show was more than just about redecorating; it was a cultural phenomenon that brought joy and creativity into living rooms across the country. And guess what? TLC has decided to bring it back, giving fans a chance to relive the magic!

Reliving the Magic: The Reboot is Here

The much-anticipated reboot premieres on April 7, bringing back the beloved original designers, including Genevieve Gorder, who's ready to jump back into the world of home makeovers. Genevieve, who is returning to the show after all these years, partnered with Fiber One and their new line of brownies to exclusively tell Closer Weekly that the timing couldn't be more perfect. “I think sentimentally, we're going back to a lot of things we loved in the early 2000s,” she shared. “And honestly, it’s just easy, feel-good television. We all need a big dose of that right now.”

While Trading Spaces was all about light-hearted entertainment and fun transformations, one of its most memorable moments was also one of its most controversial. When designer Hildi Santo-Tomas decided to glue hay to the walls for a "barnyard"-style living room design, it left fans scratching their heads. “I remember that day like it was yesterday,” Genevieve chuckled about the infamous room makeover. “How could you forget something like that? I thought to myself, ‘Why on earth would anyone do this?’ But you know what? That’s what made the show so interesting. There was such a wide array of styles and approaches that you were always left wondering, ‘Huh. What will they come up with next?’”

Genevieve added, “Sometimes it would make me mad when people would do crazy things like that because I was always worried about the integrity of the show, but I know now that there’s always someone out there who loves it. My style isn’t for everyone, and what Hildi does is definitely not for everyone, but there’s absolutely somebody every time who appreciates it.”

Looking Back: The Evolution of Design

Even though the over-the-top designs and dated decor from the original series now make fans chuckle, Genevieve admits that she, too, looks back at some of her old Trading Spaces designs with a critical eye. “I look at them now and think, ‘I wouldn’t do that,’” she confessed. “But you know what? We all look at ourselves 20 years ago and think, ‘I wouldn’t wear that, I wouldn’t style my hair like that.’ I was 25 back then, and now I’m 43, so it’s a completely different set of experiences. Growth is a beautiful thing!”
