Mel Gibson is buzzing with excitement about the Lethal Weapon 5 script, assuring fans that it’s going to be a massive hit when it finally gets the green light. But behind the scenes, there’s a whirlwind of challenges and drama that has some insiders worried the film might end up as a long-awaited letdown. A source exclusively tells Closer that while Mel is fully committed, the road ahead is fraught with obstacles.

The Promise of Legacy Sequels

One of the biggest boosts for Lethal Weapon 5 has been the success of Beetlejuice this fall. It’s shown Warner Bros. that there’s a huge appetite for legacy sequels, provided the core elements are preserved and the beloved cast returns. “The best thing for Lethal Weapon 5’s chances is the success of Beetlejuice,” says a longtime insider familiar with the franchise. “It proves there’s a market for these types of films if you do it right.”

The Challenges of Bringing Back a Classic

Despite the promise, getting Lethal Weapon 5 off the ground isn’t going to be easy. “Lethal Weapon is a tough property to nail down,” the source explains. “There are so many things that need to happen for this to work, and if even one of them doesn’t fall perfectly into place, the fifth movie might not happen. Plus, the fourth film, which came out 25 years ago, is widely considered the weakest in the series, which adds pressure to get this one right.”

  • The first challenge is securing the key cast members. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are absolutely essential to the project. But there’s a catch—Danny Glover is 78 years old. “This is a make-or-break moment for the project,” the insider says. “Danny wants to make this movie, but he’s keen to do it before he turns 80. Time is of the essence.”

Mel’s Vision and the Director’s Chair

While Mel is just shy of 70, he’s faced his fair share of industry backlash and has only recently reemerged as a bankable star and director. The source confirms that Mel is enthusiastic about the fifth installment, but with the passing of original director Richard Donner, Mel wants to take the director’s chair himself. This adds another layer of complexity to the project, as “he hasn’t finalized that deal yet.”

“There’s an enormous amount of work to get this project to the starting line,” the insider adds. “To Mel’s credit, he isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. He’s got his next directorial venture, Flight Risk, set for release next year, and he’s also planning a sequel to his blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.”

“He needs to fit Lethal Weapon into his packed schedule, and it needs to happen soon. Warner Bros. will feel a lot more confident about green-lighting the movie if Flight Risk performs well, which is currently Mel’s top priority—showing the world he still has that gritty, action-packed magic.”

“It’s a little bittersweet that Mel still has to fight for his place in the industry this far into his career, but Lethal Weapon 5 is going to be a costly film, and the studio wants to eliminate any risks.”
