Glenn Quinn's Impact on 'Roseanne': A Character Never Forgotten

Actor Glenn Quinn brought Mark Healy to life on 'Roseanne' from 1990 until 1997, a role that resonated deeply with audiences. Tragically, just five years after the show wrapped, Glenn passed away, leaving fans heartbroken. Now, with the sitcom's reboot returning to ABC, many viewers are curious about how Mark's story will be handled in the revival. How did Mark from 'Roseanne' die, and how does the show honor his memory?

A Life Cut Short: Glenn Quinn's Untimely Passing

On December 3, 2002, Glenn Quinn tragically passed away due to an accidental heroin overdose. His body was discovered by a close friend on a couch in Hollywood. At only 32 years old, his death shocked the entertainment world. Mark Healy, portrayed by Glenn, was more than just a character—he was Becky Conner’s husband and David Healy’s brother. The writers of 'Roseanne' wanted to ensure Glenn's memory was preserved in the new storyline. In fact, actress Lecy Goranson, who reprises her role as Becky, has revealed that the entire reboot is dedicated to Glenn’s memory.

During an interview with Access Hollywood, Lecy Goranson shared her heartfelt thoughts on Glenn Quinn's legacy. "It was incredibly powerful, and the show is dedicated to his memory and life. While filming, we felt his presence with us in many moments," she explained. "Even some of the new crew members, who weren’t with us back in the day, had an intuition about it. They felt a presence. Glenn was such a wonderful, generous person—easy on the eyes too. It felt right to celebrate his memory and acknowledge his loss," Lecy continued.

How the Writers Addressed Mark's Absence

Bruce Helford, the executive producer of the series, confirmed last winter to PopSugar that Mark's passing would be addressed off-screen before the events of the nine new episodes. "From a writing perspective, when you have a show that’s so naturalistic, we had to deal with that and the fact that Becky would be single," Helford shared. "We all had great affection for Glenn, and we really wanted to say something meaningful. Mark comes up a couple of times throughout the nine episodes, not just in the premiere."

Additionally, Darlene Conner, played by Sara Gilbert, and David named their son Mark after David’s brother in the new storyline. "It allowed us to pay tribute to Glenn in the show," Sara explained. Roseanne Barr echoed this sentiment, expressing her desire to honor Glenn. "We all missed Glenn so much because he was such a big part of the show, and it’s not something we wanted to gloss over," she said.

Although Mark's passing was mentioned in the revival's premiere on March 27, the Season 10 episode "Eggs Over, Not Easy" revealed more about his death. While viewers didn't learn exactly how Mark passed away, Becky confessed that she and Mark had hoped to have children before his untimely death. Since then, Becky has essentially put her life on hold as everyone else moves forward.

In a recent interview with Variety, actress Lecy Goranson, who portrays Becky, admitted her character still hasn't fully processed the pain of Mark's passing in the reboot. "I think of Becky as a very strong woman who has gone through a lot. She lost her husband, and as America will see in upcoming weeks, that loss has taken a significant toll on her," she explained.
