Life has a way of pulling at our heartstrings, doesn’t it? When Toni Tennille parted ways with her longtime husband and musical partner, Daryl Dragon, in 2014, she thought it was the end of their chapter together. After the divorce, she relocated from their Prescott, Arizona home to Florida, where she spent two years crafting her memoir. But deep down, something kept tugging at her soul. “I still had his medical power of attorney, and when I finished the book, something inside whispered, ‘You need to go back to Prescott,’” the 78-year-old revealed in an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly. That voice spoke louder than the distance between them.

Rekindling a Love That Never Truly Faded

After nearly four decades of marriage and a difficult separation, Toni realized that her heart still held a special place for Daryl. Their bond wasn’t just forged through music and memories but through the ups and downs of life itself. “But I kept thinking about Daryl,” Toni confessed. The Grammy-winning duo behind timeless hits like “The Way I Want to Touch You” and “Do That to Me One More Time” wasn’t just a partnership—it was a love story that transcended time. Even after the split, their connection remained unshakable.

Toni’s music wasn’t just about melodies—it was about love. Those iconic songs she wrote were essentially love letters to Daryl. As she reflected on their journey, Toni opened up about her final moments with him, his hidden battles with health and childhood struggles, and the enduring love that kept them connected until his passing in January 2018 from renal failure at the age of 76. It’s a story that reminds us all how love can persist even when life takes unexpected turns.

What brought Toni back to Daryl wasn’t just nostalgia—it was the same deep love that inspired her to marry him in 1975. Back then, she believed she could help him overcome the shadows of his past. “I thought I could fix him and bring him into the sunlight, but no one could get through,” she admitted. Toni suspected, though never confirmed, that Daryl might have been on the autism spectrum. Later, she learned he battled Parkinsonian symptoms, including tremors worsened by anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stemming from his childhood. Daryl shared with Toni how his father, the renowned bandleader Carmen Dragon, would lash out violently, leaving lasting scars. “He told me his father said, ‘I don’t know what happens. I see red,’” Toni recalled.

While Toni couldn’t undo the damage from Daryl’s past, she could make a difference in his present. When she returned to Prescott, she took charge of his care, firing home health aides she believed weren’t treating him properly, finding him a new living arrangement with better support, and visiting him regularly. It was her way of showing him that their love story wasn’t over yet.

    A Closer Bond After Divorce

Ironically, Toni feels they were closer after their divorce than during their marriage. During a promotional appearance for her memoir, Toni Tennille: A Memoir, on the Today show, Daryl sent a heartfelt message: “I thought you were great—I’m very proud of you.” Those words meant the world to her, especially since he rarely expressed such sentiments before. A few days later, bandmate Rusty Higgins shared an email Daryl had sent right after their divorce, saying, “Toni left me, as well she should have.” It was heartbreaking for Toni to realize that Daryl understood why she had to leave, but it also reinforced her decision to return to him when it mattered most.

When the time came, Toni was by Daryl’s side. As he was about to be transferred to a hospice facility, “I was waiting in the room with him, just the two of us,” she shared. “I told him, ‘I know you’re there, and I want you to know that I loved you anyway.’” It was a poignant moment that encapsulated their enduring love.
