Megyn Kelly Drama: NBC's Olympics Decision Sparks Controversy

When it comes to Megyn Kelly, drama seems to follow her wherever she goes. According to a recent report by Page Six, the television personality allegedly "threw a fit" when she learned that NBC had chosen Katie Couric as the co-host for the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. This decision has sparked a wave of conversation about Megyn’s role at NBC and her expectations for the network.

Here's the backstory: When Megyn signed her contract with NBC last spring, she was very clear about not wanting to be forced into covering special events. However, after Matt Lauer’s abrupt exit from the Today show, Megyn thought she’d be the obvious choice to host the opening ceremonies. Instead, NBC turned to Katie Couric, who had previously co-anchored with Matt from 1997 to 2006. This twist left Megyn feeling blindsided and upset, according to insiders.

  • “She thought she had everything figured out perfectly, by saying ‘no’ before the Matt scandal. The network was apparently so naive to put in her contract that she could say ‘yes’ or ‘no,’” a source told Page Six. “Megyn complained to her staff, she complained to her agent, so that NBC News chairman Andrew Lack would hear about her dissatisfaction. But Lack simply didn’t care.” It seems that Lack views her as a "diva" who isn't destined to be part of the NBC News inner circle. That’s a pretty harsh take, isn’t it?

    Megyn's Absence at the Olympics

Adding fuel to the fire, another recent report claims that Megyn might not be attending the Olympics at all. “This is incredibly embarrassing for Megyn,” an NBC News insider recently told Fox News. “If you’re anybody at NBC, you go to the Olympics.” Indeed, a star-studded lineup of NBC talent, including Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Natalie Morales, Willie Geist, Craig Melvin, Lester Holt, and Dylan Dreyer, will all be present from February 9 to February 25.

So why is Megyn sitting this one out? Some speculate that NBC feels Megyn might be a lightning rod, potentially distracting viewers from the feel-good vibes the Olympics usually bring. Media analyst Jeff McCall suggests, “I sense that NBC feels Megyn could be a lightning rod and distract viewers from the feel-good nature of Olympics coverage.” Despite this, Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch argues, “Megyn has as much credentials to go to South Korea as anybody else on the Today show.”

    Katie Couric Stepping In

Katie Couric, on the other hand, seems to be taking the opportunity in stride. In a previous exclusive interview with Closer, Katie expressed her willingness to contribute to the Today show during the Olympics. “I would be happy at times to contribute,” she shared. “I’d certainly pay a visit every now and then if they asked.” This marks Katie’s first time co-hosting the opening ceremonies, and she acknowledges the Olympics as an event that transcends politics. Best of luck to her!
