Hey there, friends! If you're a fan of Good Bones, you're probably still processing the emotional finale of Season 8 back in October 2023. But here's the big question on everyone's mind: Is this iconic HGTV show really over for good? Well, HGTV had a pretty surprising announcement that’s got fans buzzing.
What Went Down in Season 8 of 'Good Bones'?
Let me take you back to August 2023 when Mina Starsiak Hawk dropped a bombshell: Good Bones was wrapping up after filming her final scenes for Season 8. Now, as the season unfolded, viewers got a glimpse into the personal drama brewing behind the scenes. Mina opened up about some pretty intense moments, including a heated disagreement with her mom, Karen E. Laine, during a demo. To top it off, there was also some tension with project manager Cory Miller. But here’s the kicker—Mina insisted that these behind-the-scenes dramas weren’t why fans tuned in. “People don’t watch Good Bones for that stuff,” she told People in September 2023. “They tune in because they love the renovations and the heartwarming stories.”
As the season came to a close, we saw Mina’s brother, Tad Starsiak, pop the question to Anna Spiars in their beautifully renovated home. It was such an emotional moment as Tad got all teary-eyed, and the whole Good Bones crew was there to celebrate this special occasion. But behind the scenes, things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows. Mina admitted she was dealing with some family challenges, particularly with her mom and brother Tad. In a candid episode of her “Mina AF” podcast, she revealed, “My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are in a kind of nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated.”

Fast forward to October 2023, and Mina shared exciting news about a potential spinoff show focused on her lake house with her husband, Steve Hawk. “What I know right now is [the] first phase we are filming for a two-episode spinoff, and it’s been really fun so far,” she explained. “Steve’s involved a lot, the kids are there a lot, MJ [Coyle] and Austin [Aynes] are there for demo, and it just feels like getting back to when I started. Everything was joyful and fun.”
Meanwhile, Karen shared her excitement about a new chapter in her life. She purchased a home in Wilmington, North Carolina, and expressed her desire to continue working with HGTV. “After eight years of doing Good Bones, I love our production company,” Karen told the Indianapolis Business Journal. “They are amazingly talented people. They have taught me so much. I don’t want to stop working with them. I would like to work with them until I die because they’re wonderful. HGTV has been wonderful to us. If I could create content for HGTV until I die, that would be a dream come true.”
Is 'Good Bones' Making a Comeback?
Hold onto your hats, because in July 2024, HGTV announced that Mina and Karen’s beloved show would be returning for a special limited season. This is huge news for all the fans who thought the curtain had closed on Good Bones forever!
According to HGTV, the newest season will follow Mina and Karen as their lives evolve beyond renovating homes in Indianapolis. “Mina will purchase a very dated but ‘groovy’ lake house just north of Indy and give it much-needed cosmetic updates to create the peaceful family getaway of her dreams. Karen will set off on a new adventure in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she’ll risk her retirement nest egg on a bungalow that requires more work than anticipated to become a colorful beachy oasis. Their new beginnings will play out across a limited three-week run,” the press release stated.
The new season is set to premiere on August 14, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV. The extended 90-minute premiere episode will take viewers through Mina’s journey of buying a home and renovating her lakeside retreat, complete with tough decisions about her future. The subsequent two one-hour episodes will focus on Karen’s purchase of a 120-year-old beach bungalow, which comes with its own set of challenges, including unpredictable weather threatening to derail the entire project mid-build.
